Tasting Notes and Characteristics:
The first sip lands like warm amber velvet, unfolding notes of toasted coconut, caramelized banana, vanilla bean, and a gentle thread of baking spice that feels both polished and inviting. Brugal Doble Reserva Rum, from the Dominican Republic, delivers a clean, dry-leaning profile typical of molasses-based, column-distilled rum matured in oak, offering subtle dried orange peel, light toffee, and a faint roasted nut finish that lingers without heaviness. At 40.00% ABV, it shines neat or with a single cube, and it plays beautifully with Dark chocolate, where cacao deepens the molasses and spice, or Aged Gouda, whose crystalline bite pulls forward the rum’s caramel and toasted oak accents, creating a balanced, satisfying pairing.
Producer Information: Brugal & Co
Brugal & Co. began in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, in 1888 when Catalan-born Andrés Brugal Montaner set out to craft a distinctly Dominican rum, a tradition still guided by family Maestros Roneros who emphasize a clean, dry profile through double distillation, tropical aging entirely on the north coast, and careful use of American oak ex bourbon casks with selective sherry finishes that highlight the island’s heat, humidity, and sea air. Their production focus favors transparency with no added sugar, letting the high angel’s share and cask management shape texture and aroma. Beyond their flagship releases, the house also bottles Blanco Supremo, Añejo, Extra Viejo, 1888, Leyenda, Maestro Reserva, Colección Visionaria, and the limited Papa Andrés, building a category reputation centered on Dominican terroir and cask-driven character.
