Tasting Notes and Characteristics:
The first sip of Ilegal Mezcal Reposado 1L wraps you in a gentle smokiness, balanced by warm notes of caramel and dried herbs that linger on the palate. Crafted in Mexico, this mezcal is aged just long enough to mellow its wild agave character without losing the earthy vibrancy that defines true artisanal spirits. With an alcohol by volume of 40.00%, it delivers a smooth yet assertive experience, making it an ideal companion for grilled pork or aged cheese, where its subtle vanilla and pepper undertones can truly shine. Each glass invites you to savor the authentic flavors of Oaxaca’s heartland, elevating any meal into a celebration.
Producer Information: Ilegal Mezcal
Ilegal Mezcal was founded in the early 2000s by John Rexer in Oaxaca, Mexico, a region celebrated for its artisanal mezcal traditions and agave-rich landscapes. The brand’s origin traces back to a small bar in Antigua, Guatemala, where Rexer began smuggling mezcal from Oaxaca to serve his patrons, eventually leading to the creation of Ilegal as an official label. Ilegal is distinguished by its commitment to traditional Oaxacan production methods: slow-roasting agave hearts in earthen pits and using copper stills for distillation, resulting in a spirit that captures the earthy complexity of its terroir. While their focus remains on handcrafted mezcal expressions such as Joven, Reposado, and Añejo made exclusively from Espadín agave grown in Oaxaca’s Valles Centrales region, Ilegal does not produce other wines or spirits outside this category but has built a reputation within the craft spirits community for supporting sustainable practices and local communities throughout southern Mexico.
